As System Administrator you will work in close coordination with the growing team of ARiA scientists, engineers, and security personnel across our offices (Central Virginia / Charlottesville, VA metro area; Washington, DC metro area; and Seattle, WA) to design, develop, deploy, administer, and secure local-server and cloud-based information systems across ARiA. This position is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing firm and help design and direct the growth of our IT infrastructure while developing cutting-edge technologies that address crucial needs.
As an integral member of ARiA project teams and primary administrator for ARiA IT systems, collaboratively work to design, develop, and deploy IT systems and infrastructure
Assist in or be in charge of configuring, administering, and monitoring local and cloud-based information systems, including high-performance computing systems, servers, and user workstations, in accordance with required security guidelines. ARiA IT systems are almost entirely Linux, with some limited use of Windows (for some desktop systems) and macOS (for some desktop systems and server-side to support interface-design tools).
Working collaboratively with the Information Systems Security Manager (ISSM) and software team, perform or coordinate all activities necessary to ensure the safety of IT assets and to protect systems from intentional or inadvertent access or destruction, serving as the Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) for ARiA offices located in the Washington, DC and Charlottesville, VA metropolitan areas.
Duties will include:
- hardware setup and management
- network management
- managing LDAP including creation, deletion, account configuration, and integration with external services
- managing DNS through IaC solutions
- updating baremetal and virtual machines on a schedule as defined by NIST 800-53A and 800-171
- maintaining and testing backup solutions for critical infrastructure components
- developing a central configuration-management solution
- continuing to develop and implement a central monitoring solution via SNMP
- maintaining firewall and VPN configurations
- conducting and reporting vulnerability and configuration scans
- maintaining internal SSL/TLS certificates
- supporting development tools including continuous-integration servers, artifact repositories, and in-house databases

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or relevant/specialized training and experience
Two or more years of direct, hands-on experience working in a similar role
Fluency with Linux (RHEL 7.X/CentOS and Ubuntu) including scripting in Bash, Perl, or Python
Proficiency with Windows and macOS (sufficient to support their limited use at ARiA)
A well-rounded working knowledge of networking (e.g., LAN, WAN, Routing, Firewalls, and VPN) and IT system architecture fundamentals
Exceptional ability and desire to acquire new knowledge and skills to solve challenges
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Ability to support multiple projects in a fast-paced professional office environment
Ability to communicate technical solutions to project management and the development team
Superior oral and written communications skills

Prior Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) experience
Network security: firewall technologies (Fortinet or others)
System security: SCAP Workbench/OpenSCAP, Experience with eMASS and/or OBMS for Assessment & Authorization Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes
Virtualization/hypervisor technologies: KVM, Xen, ESXi, QEMU
Linux kernel configuration and building
