Location: Central Virginia (Madison, VA); Washington, DC metro area (Alexandria, VA); Seattle, WA

Duration: 1 year (with a possibility of up to two one-year extensions)

Salary: $77,000/year plus medical and dental benefits (100% employer-paid)

Start Date: Summer 2022

Position Description:

We are seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for postdoctoral fellowships to work on the following projects:

  • machine-learning models of ocean internal waves
  • machine-learning models for few-shot classification in synthetic-aperture sonar data
  • deep reinforcement learning for waveform adaptation in active sonar

These postdoctoral fellowships are funded through the Office of Naval Research and will be under the supervision of principal investigator Dr. Jason E. Summers. Mentorship by the principal investigator will be used for training and promoting career development of the postdoctoral fellows, and the postdoctoral fellows will also have the opportunity to publish and travel in a unique environment that bridges the industry/academia gap.

Requirements:

Doctoral degree in engineering, oceanography, or a related field.

Experience in ocean acoustics and/or sonar signal processing

Experience using Python and/or MATLAB for research

Knowledge of and experience with machine-learning

Superior oral and written communications skills

Strong record of scholarly publications
