WASHINGTON, D.C. – Applied Research in Acoustics LLC (ARiA) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the U.S. Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The Doppler clutter-mitigation (DCM) processing to be developed in this work will enhance current surface-ship anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sonar operations by improving the ability to detect and classify slow-moving targets.

“The tools we are developing in this work will significantly enhance the current capabilities of surface sonar operators to detect, classify, and prosecute submarines by reducing the spread of reverberation and clutter near the zero Doppler ridge and decreasing the impact of active interference,” Chief Scientist and Principal Investigator for the project, Dr. Jason E. Summers noted. “In particular,” he continued, “we are excited to introduce to the fleet the capabilities of the patented compressive sensing beamformer developed by Senior Scientist Dr. Charles Gaumond and his colleagues at the Naval Research Laboratory.”

Following successful demonstration of the technology during Phase I of the project, ARiA plans to further develop the prototype in Phase II and ultimately transition the algorithms to the AN/SQQ89A(V)15 Undersea Warfare (USW) combat system.
